Team Staff Profile - Jimmy Olsen
(W1) Michigan State University
Jim is a hometown boy, and since there was limited organized hockey while growing up around East Lansing, he was relegated to pond hockey like fellow coach Ron Bloomberg. As do all the other MSU coaches, Jim still plays hockey in the senior leagues and has been for the past 19 years. This is where he first met Head Coach Jeff Wilson.
Prior to joining the MSU staff Jim was an assistant coach at various levels for five years while his nephew played. The last four years were AA and AAA travel hockey teams based in Michigan and playing in tournaments throughout the mid-west. In his day job Jim works for two professional liability insurance companies as officer and operations manager.
When Jeff took the Head Coach job at MSU, he asked Jimmy to join the staff as Defensive Coordinator. Jim gave it a try not knowing if he would stay, but soon found the skill level was excellent. Quality has continued to improve every year not only at Michigan State, but also at the opposing universities.
After the third season the coaches discovered that even at the club hockey level scouting and recruiting pay off. “We’ve done a lot the past three years promoting Michigan State and club hockey. There are far more talented women players around than there are D-1 and D-3 scholarships. We’ve let them know there are quality college programs where they can continue their playing careers.”
Jim feels that as good as the ladies are at hockey, in virtually every case they turn out to be better people than they are players - Hard not to be when working with quality guys like Jimmy Olsen.
