Bio:

Coach Dan Tansey grew up in the Washington, D.C., suburban town of Annandale, Virginia.  He first started playing hockey while a Freshman at the University of Notre Dame, practiced daily with the NCAA Division I Varsity Fighting Irish during his last 2 years, and he earned a Club Sport Letter his Senior year.  During his 28 year career as a Naval Officer, Dan played in adult leagues on both coasts.  In the early 90’s he and ODU Head Coach Rich Appleby met and started playing on Adult League Teams together; they also started coaching together in the Hampton Roads Youth Hockey Association (HRYHA).

Dan has had a very successful coaching career so far; he has coached nearly 40 teams from House Mite to the U-18AA Travel level and ODU.  His teams have been to the finals many times, and he has coached winning teams at a number of tournaments at all levels.  During his first year coaching Travel, he directed his U-18AA Team to a 40-9-2 record, coming up 1 goal short of playing in the Southeast District Championships.  Dan was the leader of HRYHA’s Skills Programs for 4 years.  For four years he and Coach Appleby helped Dan’s Irish teammate and former NHL Player (2-time Stanley Cup winner) and NHL Assistant Coach and German Elite League Head Coach (3-time Champion), run a youth hockey summer camp in Virginia Beach.  This past season, Dan was also an Assistant Coach on his daughter’s Montgomery (Maryland) Blue Devils U-16 National Bound Girls Team that won the Southeast District Championship and went on to the National Tournament.

Coach Tansey’s first year with the Old Dominion University Ice Hockey Club in the 07-08 Season was highly successful.  The Monarchs recorded a number of firsts that year.  They beat archrival and perennial Blue Ridge Hockey Conference (BRHC) Champions, the University of Richmond, for the first time ever.  They were nationally ranked for the first time ever, finishing 8th in the South in the final standings.  They won the BRHC Championship for the first time ever.  They earned a bid to the South Regional Tournament for the first time ever, where they won both games, earning a berth in the National Tournament for the first time.  Dan brought some continuity to the ODU Coaching Staff this past year by being the only returning coach from their Championship Season.  With his daughter’s team this last season, it made it two years in a row he helped guide a team to a USA Ice Hockey National Tournament.  This will be Dan’s third season with the Monarchs, where he hopes to help bring back the successes of two seasons ago.
