HARBIN, CHINA - Johnny Liang (Glenview, Ill./University of Illinois) scored two goals, including the overtime game-winner, to lead the U.S. University Select Team to a 5-4 win over Korea at the 2009 Winter World University Games here tonight at the Skating Gym. Team USA outshot Korea, 51-28, in the tournament-opening victory.
Brent Cornelius (Fairbanks, Alaska/Iowa State University) started the game's scoring with a goal at 5:24 of the first period. After the United States got into penalty trouble, Korea tied the game with a five-on-three power-play goal at 8:51, before taking the lead with the man advantage at 10:03.
After Korea took a two-goal lead on a penalty shot at 6:56 of the middle frame, Devin Sheehan (Binghamton, N.Y./University of Rhode Island) scored just 1:10 later to pull the U.S. back within one. The score remained 3-2 in favor of Korea throughout the remainder of the frame, despite Team USA holding a 23-8 shots advantage.
Peter Majkozak (White Bear Lake, Minn./Iowa State University) tied the score just :42 into the third stanza, before Liang gave Team USA a 4-3 lead at 6:09 of the period. Korea evened the game once again with a power-play tally six minutes later, which eventually forced a five-minute sudden-death overtime session.
Liang notched his second of the game at 1:10 of the extra period to account for the 5-4 final.
The U.S. University Select Team returns to action at the 2009 Winter World University Games on Sunday (Feb. 22) when it faces Slovakia at 7 p.m. (6 a.m. ET).
NOTES: The U.S. team is comprised of players from collegiate ice hockey teams affiliated with the American Collegiate Hockey Association. The University of Illinois leads all schools with five players on the 22-man roster ...
