2014 opens with a pair of premier matchups

Back-to-back nights of Game of the Week action puts an exclamation point on the first weekend of 2014.

American Collegiate Hockey Association Men’s Division I Vice-President, Bill Shannon today announced a pair of weekend showdowns as the first ACHA Game of the Week for 2014. Tonight’s showdown between #3 Ohio and #6 Minot State will precede Saturday night’s game between #2 Robert Morris (IL) and #12 Mercyhurst.

This is the second appearance for Minot in the Game of the Week as their first appearance came in a #1 vs. #2 showdown against Arizona State. The defending National Champions play host to a surging Bobcats squad that won nine of their last ten games of the first semester. Ohio travels to Minot searching for some redemption as their impressive first semester closed with a loss to RMU (IL) marking just their third defeat in just under two full months of action.

Minot State enters on a run of their own, winning three-straight ACHA matchups to close December before hitting the holiday break. Their workhorse netminder, Wyatt Waselenchuk departed for an impressive run at the World University Games and will likely be between the pipes against Ohio tonight.

Saturday’s showdown in Erie pit’s the nation’s number two team against the third leading scorer in the entire nation.

RMU is 10-3 since November 1 and might just be the hottest team in the ACHA entering the second half of the year. In fact, they continue to gain ground on Arizona State for the top spot in the nation and could certainly capture a number one ranking with a strong showing this weekend.

Mercyhurst boats one of the nation’s most lethal offensive threats, Alex Galbraith. He’s currently ranks second in the nation in goal scoring (24) and is third overall in points (42). He’s well on his way to equaling the 77 points he put up in the 2012-13 season with the Lakers and has served as the catalyst for Mercyhurst’s 15-6-1 record.

Faceoff for Friday’s game between Ohio and Minot State is 8:30 ET and can be viewed on
