2011-2012 Men's Division 2 Coach-of-the-Year, Presented by Harrow Sports

The 2012 American Collegiate Hockey Association [ACHA] Men's Division 2 Coach-of-the-Year Award, presented by Harrow Sports, goes to Fred Carpenito of Northeastern University, as selected by the ACHA Men’s Division 2 Awards Committee, which includes Regional Ranking Coordinators and former winners of the Coach-of-the-Year.  This is the first ACHA Men's Division 2 Coach-of-the-Year Award for Fred, but not the first for the Carpenito family.  Fred’s son Nick is a two-time winner of the Women’s Division Coach-of-the-Year Award, also at Northeastern, winning in Division 2 in 2009 and in Division 1 in 2011.  This is the first-ever father-son tandem to have both won a Coach-of-the-Year Award.

         

Fred will be presented his ACHA Men's Division 2 Coach-of-the-Year Award at the American Hockey Coaches Association Coach-of-the-Year Celebration on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club in Naples, FL.

 

The 2011-12 season was yet another stepping stone for Fred Carpenito and his Northeastern University Huskies, including: a 21-2-5 overall record and an automatic berth to the 2012 ACHA Men's Division 2 National Championships for the first time in team history as the #2 seed in the Northeast Region; winning back-to-back Regular Season Championships in the Northeast Collegiate Hockey Association (NECHA); and a Runner-Up finish at the NECHA Playoffs, losing a heartbreaker in 2 OT to Bryant.

 

Fred credits the commitment of his players and assistant coaches for the team's success.  “We have an excellent mix of player talents across each of our classes.  The leadership, commitment and skill levels increased dramatically this past year.  Assistant Coaches Chi Tse and Dwayne Turmelle have been instrumental in our team success.   At the end of the day, we have really built the program on the team concept where we truly win and lose as a single unit.  We are not where we need to be yet, but we are surely on the right track.” 

 

In December of 2008, Fred joined the Northeastern University Huskies as an Assistant Coach.  That year featured limited team success on-and-off the ice due to an overall lack of team dedication.  In September of 2009, Fred took over as Head Coach with a greater focus on both dedication and team unity.  The 2010-11 season was a significant move forward for the Northeastern program.   With renewed focus on discipline, dedication and team unity combined with a much tougher schedule including William Paterson, Montclair State, Connecticut, and Boston College, the Huskies were able to break into the Top 10 ranking for the Northeast Region.  Northeastern qualified for the ACHA Men’s Division 2 Northeast Regional Playoffs for the first time in team history, but eventually lost to New Hampshire in the Northeast Regional Final. 

 

A native of Tewksbury, MA, where Fred’s father started the youth hockey program, Fred played through high school before turning to academics in the Nuclear Engineering program at the University of Lowell.  Fred has officiated high school and college hockey since the early 1980’s, recently working this year’s playoffs in both the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Association (ECAC) and the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).

 

Fred has a long history of coaching in Massachusetts and New Hampshire at the USA Hockey Select level through juniors on both the girls and boys side. 

 

Fred is currently a Senior Engineering Manager at Cisco Systems.  Fred and his wife Leonor reside in Acton, MA and spend their summers in Maine at their lake house.  Besides their son Nick, they also have a daughter, Nina.
