The 2012 American Collegiate Hockey Association [ACHA] Men's Division 3 Greg Stathis Coach-of-the-Year Award, presented by Harrow Sports, goes to Mike Quenneville of the University of Alabama, as selected by the ACHA Men’s Division 3 Awards Committee, which includes Regional Ranking Coordinators and former winners of the Coach-of-the-Year.
Mike will be presented his ACHA Men's Division 3 Coach-of-the-Year Award at the American Hockey Coaches Association Coach-of-the-Year Celebration on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club in Naples, FL.
In only his second season as the Head Coach, Quenneville and his University of Alabama Frozen Tide had a fruitful 2011-12 season, including: an overall record of 25-15-1 and the first berth in team history to the ACHA Men’s Division 3 National Championships as the #3 South Region seed; the first South Eastern Collegiate Hockey Conference (SECHC) Playoff Championship in team history with wins over South Carolina (5-0), Vanderbilt (4-2), and Florida (7-2); two wins at the ACHA Men’s Division 3 South Regional Playoffs over Christopher Newport (7-1) and Richmond (5-3), clinching the berth to Nationals; SECHC West Division Regular Season Champions with a perfect 10-0-0 record; and raising $3400 for the UA Acts of Kindness Fund, which was started to assist those who were effected by the tragic tornado storms of April 27, 2011.
After serving two years as an assistant coach, Quenneville was hired as the Head Coach for the University of Alabama prior to the 2010-11 season. He became the third Head Coach in Frozen Tide history.
A native of Massena, NY, Quenneville played his amateur, high school, and Junior College hockey in upstate NY. While attending Canton Agricultural and Technical College (ATC) and playing for Head Coach Terry Martin, he received All-American status and his team won the 1987 National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship.
Quenneville later transferred to NCAA Division 1 University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1987, where he would become a Team Captain. Mike was then selected to represent the United States at the 1989 Winter World University Games held in Sofia, Bulgaria, before graduating with a BSBA in Procurement Management.
Following graduation, Quenneville became an Assistant Coach at Alabama-Huntsville for the 1989-90 season, then rejoined the coaching staff as a Volunteer Assistant Coach from 1994-98. During this time, Alabama-Huntsville won both the 1996 and 1998 NCAA Division II National Championships.
Quenneville recently completed his 20th year volunteering in the Huntsville Amateur Hockey Association where he has coached teams ranging from Mites to High School. He has volunteered for USA Hockey since 1994 and has been named the Associate Coach in Chief for the Southern Amateur Hockey Association. Quenneville is in charge of setting up and conducting coaching clinics in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
Quenneville works for ClearComm Technical Sales as an Account Manager selling Electronic Components. Mike and his wife Lisa reside in Huntsville, AL.
