2011 United States University Men’s Select Team Assistant Coach Named

Scott Balboni (State College, PA) has been chosen as an Assistant Coach for the 2011 United States University Men’s Select Team, serving under Head Coach Dave Debol from the University of Michigan-Dearborn.  The United States University Men’s Select Team will compete at the Winter World University Games, to be held January 27-February 6, 2011 in Erzurum, Turkey.

The United States University Men’s Select Team is comprised of players from collegiate ice hockey teams affiliated with the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA).  The players will be selected after an identification camp August 6-8 at Patterson Ice Center in Grand Rapids, MI.  The second Assistant Coach for the team will also be selected after the identification camp.

Balboni is returning to the United States University Men’s Select Team coaching ranks for the second consecutive time, having served as an assistant coach for Team USA along with Debol at the Winter World University Games in 2009 in Harbin, China, under Joe Augustine of the University of Rhode Island.

Scott will begin his fifth year as head coach at Penn State, and is coming off a successful season that saw him lead the Icers to 32-4-2 record, the Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL) Regular Season Championship, the ESCHL Playoff Championship, the ESCHL Coach-of-the-Year Award, and a 5th place finish at the ACHA Men’s Division 1 National Championships.  Penn State has won all three ESCHL Regular Season and Playoff Championships contested.  Scott has now won back-to-back ESCHL Coach-of-the-Year Awards and was named the 2006-2007 ACHA Men’s Division 1 Coach of the Year in his first season as head coach.  Scott’s impressive 4-year record at Penn State now stands at 127-22-9, and his teams have won at least 30 games each of his 4 seasons.

Balboni was an Icers assistant from 1997-99 and 2002-06 and has been an integral part of three ACHA Men’s Division 1 National Championship teams. In addition to coaching the Icers, he also has marketing responsibilities as the Program/Marketing Coordinator of Ice Sports and the Penn State Ice Pavilion.

Scott is originally from Salem, NH, and played high school hockey at St. Johns Prep School in Danvers where he won a New England Catholic Conference Championship in 1992. He was then recruited and played as a full scholarship defenseman for NCAA Division I Providence College from 1992-96. A defensive defenseman, he tallied 13 goals and 41 assists in 138 career games with the Friars. His collegiate career culminated with the Friars beating Boston University and then Maine to capture the Hockey East Championship in 1996. He obtained a baccalaureate degree in Business Management from Providence in 1996.

Scott is well known in collegiate hockey circles and has been an outstanding recruiter and outstanding bench coach for Penn State. Balboni continues the academic and athletic excellence the program currently enjoys with 34 ACHA Men’s Division 1 Academic All-Americans during his 4 seasons as head coach. He also serves as the director of the Penn State Hockey Camp, which entertains approximately 750 campers each summer.

Since returning to State College in 2002 Balboni has been President and Founder of MAT Realty, LLC, a real estate investment company, and Nittany Brokerage, a full service investment brokerage firm.

Balboni resides in State College, PA and has two children, AJ (10) and Taylor (6).
