UNION LAKE, MI – Mo Stroemel (State College, PA) has been named head coach of the 2011 United States University Women’s Select Team, which will compete at the Winter World University Games, to be held January 27-February 6, 2011 in Erzurum, Turkey. This will be the inaugural appearance for the United States Women’s Team at the Winter World University Games.
The United States University Women’s Select Team is comprised of players from collegiate ice hockey teams affiliated with the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA).
Mo Stroemel is beginning his fourth year as Head Coach of the Penn State University Lady Icers. Mo has been with the Penn State University Ice Hockey program since 1994, serving in a variety of roles during his sixteen seasons: Women’s Head Coach (2007-Present); Men’s Division 1 Assistant Coach (2004-2007); Men’s Division 2 Head Coach (1997-2004); and Men’s Division 2 Assistant Coach (1994-1997).
In only three seasons with the women’s program at Penn State University, Mo has rebuilt the team from a 6-win campaign in 2007-2008 to a 5th Place finish at the 2009-2010 ACHA Women’s Division National Tournament in Blaine, MN. Last year’s team finished with a 12-13-1 record, and Mo’s three-year record stands at 27-47-1.
During Mo’s three seasons as an Assistant Coach with the Men’s Division 1 team, Penn State played in the Men’s Division 1 National Championship Game all three times. Working under Head Coaches Joe Battista, a 2008 ACHA Hall-of-Fame Inductee, and Scott Balboni, the Nittany Lions sported a 85-22-5 record and were ranked #1 during all three seasons. Mo’s primary responsibilities included scouting and bench management of the defense and forwards.
As Head Coach of the Men’s Division 2 team, Mo amassed a record of 131-62-11. Mo guided his team to the ACHA Men’s Division 2 National Tournament four times, including a Final Four appearance in 2003-2004 in Laurel, MD. During his seven seasons as Men’s Division 2 Head Coach, he won back-to-back ACHA Men’s Division 2 Northeast Region Coach-of-the-Year Awards in 2002-2003 and 2003-04.
A Certified Level 3 USA Hockey Coach, Mo also coaches with the State College High School teams, is director of the Penn State Girl’s Ice Hockey Camp, and is a coach with the Penn State Boy’s Hockey Camps.
Mo is a member of the Penn State University faculty, teaching classes in Technical Theatre. He lives in State College, Pa with his wife, Joan, and his children Sarah and Tom.
