HARBIN, CHINA - The U.S. University Select Team defeated China, 10-2, here tonight at the Skating Gym to finish the 2009 Winter World University Games in seventh place. Team USA concluded the tournament with a 1-2-0-2 record (W-OTW-OTL-L) and earned its highest finish at the event since returning to the competition in 2001 with players from the American Collegiate Hockey Association.

 

Jason O'Bannon (North Royalton, Ohio/Kent State University) opened the game's scoring with a power-play tally at 4:45 of the first frame. Team USA notched two more goals in the final two minutes of the period to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

 

Kyle Krannich (Mendham, N.J./University of Rhode Island) notched his second marker of the game at 9:24 of the middle stanza, before the U.S. scored twice in :10 to go up 6-0. J.J. Heredia (Wadsworth, Ill./University of Illinois) and Jaime Zimmel (Lincroft, N.J./Penn State University) each tallied their second goals of the game later in the period to give Team USA an eight-goal advantage after 40 minutes of play.

 

After China switched goaltenders to start the third period, Johnny Liang (Glenview, Ill./University of Illinois) scored at 7:26. China got on the board at 13:16, but Sean McWhorter (Kalamazoo, Mich./Western Michigan University) put the U.S. back up by nine with a marker just over one minute later. China closed out scoring at 18:35 to account for the 10-2 final.

 

NOTES: Team USA outshot China, 60-27.  The U.S. team is comprised of players from collegiate ice hockey teams affiliated with the American Collegiate Hockey Association. The University of Illinois leads all schools with five players on the 22-man roster ... Joe Augustine (North Scituate, R.I./University of Rhode Island) is the head coach of the 2009 U.S. University Select Team. Augustine is assisted by Scott Balboni (State College, Pa./Penn State University) and David Debol (Saline, Mich./University of Michigan-Dearborn).
