UNION LAKE, MI - For the first time since October of 2007, there is a new #1 ranked team in ACHA Men's Division 1 : Lindenwood University. The Lions received 34 of a possible 40 votes to top the polls in Ranking #8. Penn State moved up a spot to #2 and received 2 first-place votes, while former #1 Illinois received 4 first-place votes and dropped to the #3 spot, ending a reign of 17 consecutive polls at #1. This is the first time in school history that Lindenwood University has held the top spot. Lindenwood is also the first team besides Penn State or Illinois to hold the top spot during the regular season poll since Rhode Island did it in October of 2006. #9 Robert Morris PA clinched the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League Regular-Season Championship.
Mercyhurst was the big gainer in the polls, moving up 3 spots to #19. Oakland and Duquesne each moved up 2 spots, to #14 and #15 respectively. Eastern Michigan jumps back into the polls for the first time since Ranking #2 in October, sliding up to the #25 spot.
There are 4 weekends of hockey and 2 more rankings before the tournament teams are decided. The ninth ranking of the regular season will be released on Friday, February 13. The tenth ranking of the regular season will be released on Friday, February 27, and will determine the 16 teams that qualify for the National Tournament.
The 2009 ACHA Men's Division 1 National Championships will be hosted by John Carroll University and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission and will take place March 14-18, 2009 at the Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, OH. Sixteen teams will qualify for the tournament.
